The Discovery Channel is developing a new show which will follow actual stories of  hauntings and possessions. I know what you are thinking, “oh great, another ghost-hunter type show” but there is a different twist on this, the Vatican will be providing the case files and the priests that will be performing the exorcisms. According to the Discovery Channel the show will recreate some stories based on case files from the Vatican archives as well as interviews with the Catholic church’s top experts on the subject.  “The Vatican is an extraordinarily hard place to get access to, but we explained we’re not going to try to tell people what to think,” says Discovery president and GM Clark Bunting. The network hopes that if the first season is a success, it will allow for an expansion in which it will follow the church’s investigators as they look into new cases.

I would like to hear some opinions on this, do you think this could shed some new light on how the Catholic church handles reports of demonic possession? or will this just be another breeding ground for the crazies who want their fifteen minutes of fame?

The show is set to premier this Spring.

It has been brought to my attention by one of our readers that the Discovery Channel has revised their initial statement regarding the partnership with the Vatican saying “To ensure the accuracy and integrity of our content, we did meet in an unofficial capacity with individual members of the Vatican staff. We didn’t intend to imply that we had a ‘sanctioned’ partnership.”
